Study in Europe

Discover the World in the Netherlands

Would you like to study at an excellent university and enjoy an international environment? What about studying in the Netherlands? Dutch education institutions offer outstanding English-language programmes that will prepare you for the international labour market.

English-taught programmes

Loughborough University - Research EngineersJoin the 75,000 international students who are already studying at 60 different institutions across the Netherlands. You can choose from no fewer than 1,450 English-language programmes, more than in any other country in mainland Europe.

When you come to the Netherlands you will open your mind and develop an international view of your discipline. The 16 million inhabitants of the country are used to working with people from international backgrounds. The Netherlands’ central position in Europe has always attracted people from outside its borders. Today, many internationally-operating companies and organizations continue to set up offices here. And, in the Netherlands you also have the port of Rotterdam and Schiphol airport within easy reach and London, Paris and Berlin are just a short trip away.

Technology and Engineering

The Netherlands is home to a high-quality knowledge economy that excels in technological innovations in many and varied fields. If you are looking to advance your future career, the Netherlands really is the place to study!

You are probably aware that the Netherlands is a leader in water management. Without its dikes and sea defences, two-thirds of the country would be in immediate danger of flooding. But thanks to the most modern civil engineering techniques, outstanding Dutch engineers have been able to keep the waters of rivers and the sea at bay for centuries.

The whole world is interested in this Dutch expertise. You will find Dutch engineering firms everywhere: in Dubai for the construction of the very imaginative palm-tree shaped island group; building a port in Oman, an airport in Hong Kong and dikes for the flood-threatened city of New Orleans.

Engineering in HollandA remarkable example of the affinity between the Dutch and water are the celebrated designs of bridges by architect Ben van Berkel. Another example is the team of young Dutch designers who have won major prizes with their clever Senz storm umbrella.

And the Netherlands is home to many more technological innovations. Think, for instance, of the use of sustainable energy. Many wind mills are built with Dutch knowledge, and Nuna, the world’s fastest solar-powered car, was designed by technology students in the Netherlands. In addition, one of the market leaders in navigation systems, TomTom, has its roots in the Netherlands.

Reasons enough to choose to study at one of the three Dutch universities of technology. The universities in Delft, Eindhoven and Twente are regarded worldwide as top institutes. Moreover, they have joined forces in the 3TU Federation and can thus offer students many additional opportunities. The agricultural university in Wageningen also has an outstanding international reputation especially in the fields of food technology and agricultural science.

All Dutch research universities and universities of applied sciences offer high-quality technology programmes in which you will often be working together with the business community and knowledge institutions. You will be well prepared for the international labour market by following inspiring and professionally-oriented courses, based on top-class research.

Quality

You can also rest assured that Dutch institutions offer you the best education programmes you could desire. A comprehensive quality assurance system guarantees you that your programme satisfies all international quality requirements. Only programmes that have been officially approved by the state are entitled to award qualifications. In addition the ‘Code of Conduct  with respect to international student in Dutch higher education’ applies in the Netherlands. This allows education institutions to guarantee students from outside the Netherlands that the information provided, admission procedures, counselling and the courses offered are of a high level. The much-praised, interactive and practically-oriented approach used in Dutch teaching ensures that you will receive the best preparation imaginable for an international career.

If you wish to undertake PhD research, the Netherlands is also an outstanding choice. The high quality of Dutch scientific research is recognized internationally. Talented young researchers have the opportunity to take the next step in their chosen career in the Netherlands with the help and supervision of researchers who are leaders in their fields.

The country’s formal name is ‘Nederland’, meaning ‘low country’, which refers to the fact that much of the land is at or below sea level.

Today, the Netherlands is also sometimes called ’Holland‘, a name that is derived from the names of the two western coastal provinces, North and South Holland, which were the most developed and wealthiest part of the country in the 17th century and played a dominant role in the country's history.
