The international standing of the Faculty’s
research was confrmed recently by the
results of the RAE 2008 in which 90% of
our publications were classifed as “of
international quality” with 55% being graded
as “internationally excellent” and “world-
leading”. Whilst we are proud of this tradition
and the reputation for excellence in research
that has been established over many years,
our aim is to build on the high standards of
research and teaching within the Faculty.
To ensure that we remain a centre of
excellence in the biological sciences, there
have been major investments during the past
few years in new buildings, refurbishment
of laboratories and in state of the art
equipment. For example, the Sir Henry
Wellcome Functional Genomics Facility
was established to provide researchers with
access to the latest equipment in the felds
of genomics, proteomics and metabolomics.
In addition, the completion of the frst phase
of the Scottish Centre for Ecology and the
Natural Environment on the banks of Loch
Lomond, Scotland’s largest freshwater loch,
has provided excellent facilities for research
in freshwater and terrestrial ecology.
With top class researchers working in
excellent research facilities we can offer
outstanding opportunities for students to
gain research training at both Masters and
PhD levels. The Faculty currently offers
10 MRes courses and others are planned.
We also offer both 3 year and 4 year PhD
programmes as well as a wide range of Skills
Training courses.
