Computing is a young, exciting and rapidly evolving subject and its influence in our everyday lives – for work, study, and recreation – is rapidly increasing. It opens up a wide variety of career paths and provides you with a set of skills that will allow you to tackle major technical challenges with confidence and expertise.
All our courses have a strong practical component that complements the underlying theoretical foundations. There is a high degree of commonality between the early foundational years which makes it possible to transfer between courses.
The Department offers the following taught post-graduate degrees:
PG Dip/MSc Information Management
PG Dip/MSc Information and Library Systems
PG Dip/MSc Computer and Internet Technologies
PG Dip/MSc Forensic Informatics
The Information Management degree is designed to create versatile managers who can operate at the interface between business, information resources and information and communications technologies. The Computer and Internet Technologies degree is aimed at students with a background in computer science, engineering or a mathematical discipline. It provides them with a specialised knowledge of internet programming, enterprise networking, mobile applications and computer security. The Information and Library Studies degree provides a professional qualification for those wishing to work in the library sector. The course is accredited by CILIP, the UK's professional body, and is recognised world-wide.
The Forensic Informatics degree, taught in conjunction with the University’s Centre for Forensic Science, seeks to provide students with the knowledge and skills necessary to perform forensic investigation of all aspects of crime and terrorism involving computers, networks and mobile communications systems.
All of these courses are an excellent preparation for a career in industry or academia.
Under the Scottish Executive Fresh Talent Initiative, students who require a visa, and who successfully complete our MSc degrees, can have up to two years extension enabling them to stay and work in Scotland.
