All our courses have a strong practical component that complements the underlying theoretical foundations. There is a high degree of commonality between the early foundational years which makes it possible to transfer between courses.

Postgraduate Degrees in Artificial Intelligence

PG Dip/MRes Automated Planning for Autonomous Systems

Autonomy is one of the most important current growth areas in Computer Science, with many diverse applications in robotics, mobile systems and ubiquitous distributed computing. Computer systems of the future will be increasingly intelligent and capable of autonomous high-level decision-making. The MRes in Automated Planning for Autonomous Systems concentrates on Artificial Intelligence for robotic systems, from planetary rovers to domestic robots and next-generation mobile personal devices. It provides the perfect opportunity for the best graduates of Computer Science and Engineering to be at the forefront of developments of this exciting technology. The course is delivered by an internationally-known research team actively engaged in planning and machine learning research.

The MRes degree structure has a strong research emphasis with a large project component. The project will give students the opportunity to develop applications of planning in a range of cross-disciplinary fields from prosthetics to power station management and planetary rover control.

The Department has a number of fully-funded EPSRC scholarships available for the best UK applicants entering the course in October 2008. For further information please contact:

Staff Profile

The University of StrathclydeProfessor Derek Long, Computer Science,

Professor Derek Long researches in Artificial Intelligence, specialising in automated planning. This problem is central to the realisation of autonomous intelligent systems, such as space probes including planetary explorers. Planning problems are optimisation problems that involve finding schedules of activities that will achieve some specified collection of goals, within constraints on resources and time.

Derek is shown here with a copy of the Beagle 2 lander, designed by British scientists to perform science experiments on the surface of Mars. Although the lander shared the fate of more than half of Martian probes, failing to make contact after its landing on December 25th 2003, its design continues to play an important role in proposals for the European Space Agency's ExoMars lander planned for 2013. Derek is contributing towards work that aims to include intelligent on-board planning capabilities for ExoMars.

Student Profile

Student at StrathclydeI wanted to build on my background in management and Marketing, and develop my ability to use science and technology to complement my existing approaches to solving business problems. For this reason I chose to read Information Management at the University of Strathclyde.  Besides providing me with attractive employment opportunities in industry, this experience has helped me to co-found an entrepreneurial high technology start up company that I intend to develop full-time on completion of my MSc thesis. I have learned a wide range of valuable skills and I feel that investing my time in postgraduate study and been very worthwhile.
