Staff Profile

The University of StrathclydeDr Derek Long, Reader in Computer Science,

Dr Derek Long researches in Artificial Intelligence, specialising in automated planning. This problem is central to the realisation of autonomous intelligent systems, such as space probes including planetary explorers. Planning problems are optimisation problems that involve finding schedules of activities that will achieve some specified collection of goals, within constraints on resources and time.

Derek is shown here with a copy of the Beagle 2 lander, designed by British scientists to perform science experiments on the surface of Mars. Although the lander shared the fate of more than half of Martian probes, failing to make contact after its landing on December 25th 2003, its design continues to play an important role in proposals for the European Space Agency's ExoMars lander planned for 2013. Derek is contributing towards work that aims to include intelligent on-board planning capabilities for ExoMars.

Student Profile

Student at StrathclydeI wanted to build on my background in management and Marketing, and develop my ability to use science and technology to complement my existing approaches to solving business problems. For this reason I chose to read Information Management at the University of Strathclyde.  Besides providing me with attractive employment opportunities in industry, this experience has helped me to co-found an entrepreneurial high technology start up company that I intend to develop full-time on completion of my MSc thesis. I have learned a wide range of valuable skills and I feel that investing my time in postgraduate study and been very worthwhile.
