The University of Sheffield
University guides confirm our position as one of the UK's leading universities. The Virgin 2007 Alternative Guide to British Universities, for instance, says that “Sheffield is a top university across the board”.
Teaching quality assessments rate our teaching very highly across a wide range of subjects, and official research assessments confirm our reputation as a centre for world-class research.
Sheffield Civil Engineering courses ranked 2nd in the UK for the second year running according to the 2005 Guardian University Guide.
The city of Sheffield – city size, village atmosphere
Located in South Yorkshire, in the north of England, Sheffield is England's fourth-largest city. It has the wealth of facilities you would expect to find in a major city – yet it's compact, and accessible.
- The area is bursting with culture and entertainment, including award-winning theatres, museums and galleries.
- It is the greenest city in England, with 150 woodlands and 50 public parks. Crime statistics show it is also one of the UK's safest cities.
- It has the cheapest living costs in the UK (Source: RBOS Student Living Index 2006)
- Sheffield was rated the safest city when compared with 12 other leading university cities in England, by annual incidents of recorded violent crime per 1000 of population ( Home Office figures 2004 – 05)
- It was rated 1st equal for social life and Students’ Union services in Virgin 2007 Alternative Guide to British University
