Academic strengths


The School of the Built Environment has a strong, multi-disciplinary, teaching and learning base, strengthened by national and international collaboration. We have over 53 academic staff of whom 26 are professors, we also have 32 visiting professors. Our top calibre, teaching, research and technical staff offer access to leading edge thinking, knowledge and support facilities of the highest quality.

 

Career prospects


The Built Environment is the largest industry in the UK. Our graduates have excellent career opportunities - 95% of our graduates go straight into career jobs or further study .

 

The Built Environment is closely related to our everyday life. From designing and constructing houses, to building and repairing bridges, airports, and roads, the industry provides unparalleled employment opportunities. Earnings are significantly higher than the average for all industries. Many built environment professionals say that it is the variety of the work that attracts them as no two projects or days are the same.

 

MSc programmes

 

The School of the Built Environment offers management focused, professionally accredited, MSc taught programmes in which all assessment is by coursework . Our school’s programmes can be studied full-time on campus or part-time over the Internet via an interactive virtual learning environment, featuring regular tutor contact and directed support. Studying part-time allows students to combine a career with study.

 

The programmes have been developed in partnership with the Built Environment industries, to meet their needs for future innovative leaders. Some programmes are designed for new entrants to the Built Environment sector, whilst others offer existing practitioners the opportunity for advanced professional development. All reflect the very latest global thinking and practice in their sectors. They include:

Research strength


We also offer world-class research opportunities (PhD, Professional Doctorate and  MPhil) through the Research Institute for the Built and Human Environment (BuHu). BuHu is the highest rated (6*) and largest research institute for the Built Environment in the UK. BuHu is internationally recognised for research excellence in the Built Environment.

 

PhD study options:

  • Full-time on campus - 3 years
  • Split-site - 3 years with Masters’ or 5 years with first degree (honours)
  • Via Internet (with tutor support) - 3 years with Masters’

 

Professional Doctorate:

  • Designed for practising professionals
  • Studied part-time
  • Provides for recognition of work based learning and professional expertise
  • Awards: Doctor of Built Environment, Doctor of Real Estate or Doctor of Construction Management

 

BuHu Research Masters’ awards also available.
