Oxford is the oldest university in the English-speaking world. An internationally renowned centre for teaching and research, Oxford welcomes students and scholars from across the globe. One of the many advantages of studying at Oxford is the opportunity to enjoy the benefits of a large international university whilst living in a smaller college community typically of about 500 people. Oxford students come from all kinds of schools, backgrounds and countries, and all candidates are considered on the basis of their own individual merits and potential.
Oxford University Computing Laboratory is expanding rapidly and is one of the world’s leading computer science departments. By the beginning of next academic year it will comprise over 50 academic staff from 22 countries. The Department’s strengths include theory, programming languages, computer security, databases and information systems, software engineering and computational linguistics. It is reaching out into other disciplines through collaboration on teaching and research in areas such as computational biology, quantum computing and information engineering.
As a student, you will have direct contact through lectures, tutorials and projects with some of the leading names in computer science. Tutorial teaching, usually in groups of 1-3, is centred on your college, while lectures, projects, practicals and examinations are organised from the Laboratory.
It is now possible to choose between a three or a four-year degree in Computer Science or in Mathematics and Computer Science. Our courses assume no prior knowledge of computing. A mix of practical and theoretical courses are on offer that, after the first year, give students the opportunity to follow their own interest.
We offer a constantly changing range of courses to keep up-to-date with technological trends, always concentrating on the principles that underpin computing. These principles should prepare you for future technology as well as today’s.
There is presently a shortage of well-qualified computer science graduates. This is forecast to grow thanks to an international decline in university applications in recent years. The degrees on offer at Oxford provide excellent preparation both for students carrying on to do a graduate degree and for those entering the IT industry. Students are also trained in clear and logical thought, and in presenting their work, so they are much in demand by the financial sector and other areas outside IT.
The department encourages applications from well-qualified students to its varied and active research programme. The Laboratory's research is organised into five groups, although in practice there are many links between groups, as well as collaborations with other departments, universities, companies, and research institutes.

Doctoral students in the Computing Laboratory do individual research under the direct supervision of a leading academic expert in their field. The Laboratory's doctoral programme is aimed at developing its students into mature researchers, able to make original scientific contributions that have both practical significance and a rigorous, elegant theoretical grounding. A doctoral degree from Oxford is an excellent preparation for an academic career, advanced research and development in industry, or entrepreneurial ventures.
MSc courses cater for those students who seek one year’s study at Master’s level. Four graduate taught courses are available: MSc in Computer Science, MSc in Mathematical Modelling & Scientific Computing; MSc in Mathematics & Foundations of Computer Science, and MSc in Software Engineering (part-time over several years). Generally, students follow taught courses in the first half of the year and then undertake an individual project in an area that interests them. Many overseas students take these degrees, particularly the MSc in Computer Science. All these courses are excellent preparation for a career in industry or academia
