Newcastle ComputingWhy Newcastle?
The School of Computing Science is one of the UK’s leading computing research centres. It also has one of the highest student satisfaction ratings for computing study in the UK and high postgraduate employment rates.

 

Newcastle is a vibrant, exciting city, with excellent cultural, sporting and recreational resources, set in the historical North-East of England.

 

The School has been graded as 5 (on a scale of 1 to 5*) in each of the three Research Assessment Exercises (RAE) carried out to date. This rating indicates international excellence in all our main research areas. The School has over 25 research projects, funded by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC), the UK Government’s Department of Trade and Industry (DTI), ESPRIT and industry.

 

Newcastle CampusThe School is involved in international collaboration with over 70 leading research centres throughout Europe. We have four research groups (Dependability; Distributed Systems; Scalable Information Management and Theoretical Computing Science) and house two research centres (the Centre for Software Reliability and the North East Regional e-Science Centre). We also house the Active Learning in Computing: Centre for Excellence in Teaching and Learning (CETL-ALiC) and have close links with the Informatics Research Institute (IRI). There are regular research based seminars and discussion groups which Masters students may attend.

MSc in Computing Science

This programme is a computer science conversion degree for people with little or no experience in computing. It includes topics such as requirements analysis, database design, network technologies and programming. The programme includes a 3 month individual research project, which teaches skills in independent working and presentation. Graduates have excellent employment prospects in a wide spread of fields.

MRes in Bioinformatics

Newcastle ComputingBioinformatics solves biological problems using computing, informatics and statistics. With the enormous amounts of data now available to biologists, this discipline has seen a massive growth. The Newcastle MRes is modern, integrated and researchoriented. It is suitable for those from any scientific background. The first semester teaches the core numerical, biological and computing skills, while the second sets these in specific areas of bioinformatics, while the third applies them to a substantial research project.

MSc in Computer Security and Resilience

This programme is about analysing and building systems that are secure against
accidental and malicious faults - skills that are in high demand today. Topics include information security, human factors, and the technology for developing trustworthy software. The programme, offered by one of the world's leading groups in dependable computing, has strong industry support and is suitable for graduates in Computing, IT, Mathematics or Engineering.

MSc in System Design for Internet Applications

MSc in E-Business and Information Systems

Newcastle TechnologyThis programme is run jointly by the Newcastle University Business School and the School of Computing Science. It is primarily aimed at graduates of all disciplines who are interested in a management career with a strong emphasis on E-Business and Information Systems. On completion we expect graduates to bridge the gap between managers who, for the most part, lack the technical expertise of computer scientists, and computer scientists who do not have a grounding in business management.

MSc in Mobile and Pervasive Computing

This programme combines leading research and teaching expertise in mobile
communications and distributed computing from the School of Electrical, Electronic and Computer Engineering and the School of Computer Science.
