Introduction
The Department of Chemistry at the University of Glasgow has a long history of excellence in research and teaching and we are committed to continuing that tradition. In addition to a full range of undergraduate and postgraduate courses, members of the Department maintain a broad and internationally-competitive research portfolio, which spans the entire spectrum of chemical science as well as the interfaces with biology, materials science and physics.

Degree Programmes
The undergraduate degree programmes in Chemistry on offer at the University of Glasgow are varied and flexible and include Masters and Bachelors honours degrees in Chemistry:
- Chemistry with Medicinal Chemistry
- Chemistry with Forensic Studies
- Chemical Physics
- Environmental Chemistry
The five-year Masters (MSci) degree, the flagship of our undergraduate programmes, includes a year-long industrial or overseas placement; in addition to being an essential part of the MSci qualification, many undergraduates find this opens doors for future careers, either in postgraduate study or employment.
We also offer a wide variety of joint degrees including Environmental Biogeochemistry, Environmental Chemistry & Geography, Biology & Chemistry, Chemistry & Mathematics and Geography, Chemistry & the Environment.
Making the right choice?
For those embarking on an undergraduate career who have not totally committed to their preferred subject area, the University of Glasgow offers admission initially into the Faculties of Science. This allows undergraduate students to explore a range of subjects in addition to chemistry before specialisation. This is a great way of broadening your scientific horizons and ensuring you make the correct choice of degree specialisation.
Research in Chemistry, and the WestCHEM Research School
The Department of Chemistry at the University of Glasgow has a superb research environment with world leading research groups and facilities. Our research covers all aspects of chemistry and together with the Department of Pure & Applied Chemistry at the University of Strathclyde, we have formed the WestCHEM Research School in Chemistry. WestCHEM brings together the strengths of the two major chemistry research schools in the West of Scotland, to offer an outstanding research environment for world-leading research in a large, diverse and expanding chemistry research school. WestCHEM is also part of ScotCHEM, a major new collaborative venture between the major Schools of Chemistry in Scottish Universities.
Opportunities for postgraduate research in Chemistry
The research groups in the Department of Chemistry operate in all the major areas of modern chemistry research, including: Biological Chemistry with a strong interface with biological sciences, with major efforts in structural biology, biophysical chemistry, medicinal chemistry, drug synthesis and design; Synthetic Chemistry, where the major research areas of organic synthesis with applications in biological and medicinal chemistry are complemented by inorganic and materials synthesis, including organometallic chemistry, green synthesis, soft ligand chemistry and a range of solid-state syntheses; Physical Organic Chemistry as part of a new Centre in the city of Glasgow; Materials Chemistry, including characterisation, synthesis, catalysis and surface science, organic solid-state materials, self-assembly, supramolecular chemistry, magnetic materials and nanochemistry; Advanced Structural Chemistry and Spectroscopy offering novel methods for materials characterisation and understanding; Theoretical Chemistry and Modelling, with state-of-the art computational techniques; Analytical and Environmental Chemistry, with research in environmental materials, land remediation and food science. The research department is organised into three main sections, click below for further details.
We welcome applications from the UK and overseas to join our PhD programme, in which the Graduate School plays a key role. The WestCHEM Graduate School currently comprises around 170 PhD students, with around half of these based in the Department of Chemistry at the University of Glasgow. There is a wide variety of research topics from which to choose at the cutting edge of Chemistry, many involving collaboration with industry and other research organisations in the UK and abroad.
Glasgow: Chemistry, the University and Beyond
