Welcome to the School of Chemistry

The School of Chemistry at the University of Edinburgh is the top rated for teaching and research in Scotland. In the 2001 Research Assessment Exercise, we achieved a 5A rating in recognition of the international quality of our research.
With excellent facilities and services combined with a wealth of expertise, Chemistry at Edinburgh has much to offer our partners. Collaborators in industry and in other research organisations enjoy working with us on mutually beneficial projects. They particularly appreciate the enthusiasm and commitment shown by our staff and our professional approach to research, development and commercialisation.
Why Study Chemistry at Edinburgh?
Internships available for Summer 2008
Don't you deserve the best?
The Scottish Higher Education Funding Council rated our teaching excellent, our research has been graded 5A (international standard) and our courses are fully accredited by the Royal Society of Chemistry. The School of Chemistry at Edinburgh is one of the very few UK departments to achieve these standards. Lectures are delivered by committed staff who are enthusiastic to train chemists for today's employment market, backed up with small group tutorials and workshops. Practical work is undertaken in our modern purpose built undergraduate laboratories. At Edinburgh you will enjoy state of the art facilities in well equipped laboratories fitted out to the highest safety standards.
Can't make up your mind which subjects you want to study?
Here at Edinburgh we offer a very flexible course structure. Therefore if you are not certain where your interests lie then it is usually possible to change at the end of first year and sometimes later. As well as Chemistry we also offer specialist chemistry degree courses - Chemical Physics, Chemistry with Environmental & Sustainable Chemistry, Chemistry with Materials Chemistry and Medicinal and Biological Chemistry - all of which share common early years with Chemistry.
All programmes are offered at BSc or Masters (MChem) level. Many of the MChem courses can also be taken with a year in industry. A number of opportunities are available to spend a year abroad either elsewhere in Europe or in Asia or the USA as part of the MChem "with a Year in Europe" or "with Industrial Experience" degrees.
More detailed information on all our courses is available.

Overview of the Graduate School

Excellence in Research - Excellence in Teaching
Our mission is to promote and support high quality postgraduate training in all branches of Chemistry. We perform high quality basic and applied research, meeting the needs of the chemical industry, academia and commerce within the UK and elsewhere. A PhD degree in chemistry will equip you to lead research projects in academia or industry, and also opens the door to numerous other careers in the financial sector, management, patent law, government and civil service, publishing and so on.
From September 2008 we will also offer one year taught masters courses in Materials Chemistry and Medicinal and Biological Chemistry which will offer an excellent introduction and training opportunity for those interested in research in these areas of chemistry.
The School of Chemistry at Edinburgh is part of the EastCHEM School of Chemistry, established jointly with St Andrews University in 2005. The combined School is amongst the largest in the country, with:
Research students are members of their supervisors' research groups and are also associated with broader groupings of researchers to increase the breadth of the scientific environment in which they work. The progress of students is monitored, especially in the first year of graduate study, and practice is given in the presentation of scientific work both to their own research group and to a wider audience. The workings of the Graduate School and the provision of research, study and training facilities is reviewed annually in the Staff-Graduate Student Liaison Committee.
You can also view our Induction Day Powerpoint presentation.
We also welcome informal visits by prospective students any time. Please contact Annette Burgess or a member of the academic staff whose research interests you.
