More information on research opportunities
The School is a main partner in the Welsh Institute of Mathematical and Computational Sciences as well as the postgraduate training networks MAGIC (pure/applied mathematics) and NATCOR (OR/statistics) and has a rich network of links with several universities abroad. The research conducted at the School is of internationally recognised standard and attracts funding by national and European research councils and industrial sponsors.
The School is located in a dedicated building close to the city centre. Postgraduate students profit from the facilities of the Cardiff University Graduate Centre and can enjoy the cultural offers of the Capital of Wales.
Postgraduate Research
MPhil/PhD in Mathematics
Our Postgraduate Research programmes (MPhil 1 year full-time, PhD 3 year full-time; part-time option available) offer the opportunity of working on a research project, leading to the international cutting edge, in any of the areas of Mathematics represented in the School. The individual supervision is complemented with a wide range of training options and weekly seminars in each research direction.
Past students are now academic staff in the UK and abroad, and senior statisticians and managers in industry and business. These degree programmes are suitable for holders of an undergraduate degree (2:1 level or above) or taught postgraduate degree in Mathematics or an appropriate related subject.
Taught Postgraduate Courses
MSc in Operational Research and Applied Statistics
MSc in Operational Research, Applied Statistics and Risk
Our new MSc programmes (1 year full-time, 2 year part-time) provide training in analytical methods to tackle complex organisational problems and decision-making, and in statistical analysis. They offer highly transferable skills for use within industry, business and the public sector.
We work closely with organisations who employ Operational Researchers, Statisticians and Financial/Risk Modellers, and emphasise the practical aspect through case studies and project work in the ‘real world’. The MSc in Operational Research, Applied Statistics and Risk, a unique MSc degree
combination in the UK, features in-depth study of risk models in financial markets and other sectors.
