Studying marine science in the School of Natural Sciences at Edith Cowan University makes a lot of sense. The School of Natural Sciences has excellent and committed teachers, and provides state-of-the-art facilities in the region of Australia that has a reputation for great weather and lifestyle. There is no better place to study marine science in Australia.

The Marine and Freshwater Biology Degree provides students with a broad and comprehensive background in aquatic sciences, with a particular emphasis on marine
biology. Staff teaching in the program are highly active researchers, which means
that new developments in the discipline are rapidly incorporated into the course’s
content. It is this commitment to teaching that has resulted in the school’s courses regularly ranking highly in an Australianwide survey, reflecting the school’s commitment to high quality teaching and its desire to produce graduates with the

Edith Cowan University (ECU) is located in Western Australia, one of the World’s most ancient landscapes and with unique biodiversity and landforms encompassing tropical to cool temperate ecosystems. Western Australia also has one of the lowest population densities in the World, meaning that many of its ecosystems are close to pristine. This provides an ideal opportunity to study natural and human-disturbed ecosystems, enhancing our understanding of how systems work and how humans impact them.

With the Indian Ocean at its doorstep, ECU students have easy access to nearby expanses of long, white beaches. Beyond the beach lay extensive beds of seagrass and reefs full of algae. The coral reefs of Ningaloo are within driving distance to the north and rival the Great Barrier Reef for coral and fish diversity. To the south, a myriad
of estuaries and coastal lagoons are within easy reach. In other words, Western Australia is one the best locations for studying a wide range of some of the most beautiful marine and coastal ecosystems anywhere in the World. These areas provide
great places to work and play. In fact, the school places strong emphasis on practical work providing plenty of opportunity to work in some of these locations during the degree. Scientists within the school also conduct research in a many of those locations, which will provide you with the opportunity to visit a range of environments
during your degree.

ECU’s state-of-the-art facilities maximise opportunities to study these ecosystems. The School is located in a new Science and Health building with magnificent teaching and research laboratories and industry standard analytical equipment. We have an extensive array of field equipment, including boats, four-wheel drive vehicles, SCUBA and sampling equipment for marine sciences.

A team of highly experienced academic and technical staff, with extensive research and industry experience, enhance your learning opportunities.

Study abroad at ECU will give you an invaluable opportunity to experience ecosystems, plants and animals that occur nowhere else in the World. It will broaden
your perspective professionally and at the same time give you all the personal benefits that come from traveling, meeting new people and experiencing different places.

By studying in the School of Natural Sciences, you will be interacting with like-minded
students from Australia and abroad. The school also offers degrees in Biological Sciences, Environmental Sciences and Analytical Chemistry. So, come and make new friends, broaden your horizons and enjoy learning in a great environment.
