Geosciences Courses in America

Geosciences are best understood as the earth sciences. They are the study of the composition and structure of the earth, the term geosciences covering a whole range of subjects, including geology, geophysics, soil science, oceanography, hydrology, glaciology, atmospheric sciences and biology.

The study of geosciences is more important than ever in light of the challenges we face to protect our environment. America's power to influence environmental policy on the world stage is supplemented by its leading technology and expertise in the field of geosciences. The US was only recently responsible for having the highest gas emissions in the world but their commitment to the Kyoto Protocol and the election of Barack Obama's administration has resulted in a surge of progressive environmental policy making. Issues that most urgently need addressing, and which are very much in the public eye, include climate change, energy conservation, water availability and waste disposal.

What this means for students studying in the US is a wealth of opportunity, both during and beyond study, signified by America's 80 billion dollar investment in clean energy and green transportation last year. Generally speaking, studying for a degree in geosciences in America will require you to study modules in geology, geochemistry and geophysics. You will get to grips with the geological processes of the earth, gain an understanding of its structure and history, as well as begin to look to its evolution. Field research and laboratory work make up a large part of a geosciences degree and in the US you will have access to high quality equipment as well as a vast and varied landscape. Through optional modules you can mould your geosciences degree to suit your preferences and future career ambitions. Your academic study is integrated with research and independent study. At an American university you will have access to modern observational equipment, such as the West Texas Mesonet and Ka-band mobile Doppler radars.

The work available to geoscientists is varied. You could find yourself at the bottom of the ocean, studying planets or exploring for new resources. Exciting it may sound but the challenges it encompasses and its importance to modern day society are not to be underestimated. Around 125, 000 geoscientists are employed in the USA as advisors and in oil, gas, mining, minerals and water resource companies. The career prospects for geosciences graduates in the US are better than ever and parallel the educational opportunities available to you there.
