Forensic Science Courses in America

Forensic Science comprises a whole range of different sciences and is primarily used within the legal system to provide evidence for criminal cases. As a means of legal evidence, Forensic Science is becoming increasingly important and funding for its development has increased.

The trend of using Forensic Science as the pinnacle of television and literary entertainment highlights its significance but also conveys a false image of Forensic Science. There is still much development and research needed in the field of Forensic Science in order for it to continue supporting criminal justice systems, making forensic students highly sought after.

Right now, the drive in the US to improve Forensic techniques and reliability parallel the growing demand for specialists and make America the perfect arena in which to study. Chris Hassell, director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation laboratory, is currently leading a campaign to change the way in which Forensic Science is viewed and implemented in America. Since Forensic Science in the US has faced some severe criticism, the government is set to drastically improve Forensic Science in law enforcement. This provides young students with the perfect opportunity to study Forensic Science using leading research and technology in forward thinking conditions.

A degree in Forensic Science includes the study of chemistry and biology, criminal investigation procedures, physics and mathematics. Many universities in the US will also require you to undertake an internship in a crime laboratory. At some institutions you will also have the chance to partake in a full year of unique research. The University of Mississippi, named in the top 5 for its Forensic Science program by the American Academy of Forensic Sciences (AAFS), is one such institution. The research tends to be carried out during the final year of study and can count towards your final mark and may open you up to future career prospects. At institutions such as Mississippi, access to laboratories and specialist equipment is provided to forensic science students.
