UCLA Engineering Online Masters Program

UCLA Engineering Online Masters Program

Message from the Director
Welcome to the UCLA Master of Science in Engineering Online Program.  The Henry Samueli School of Engineering and Applied Science - Master of Science Online Program (HSSEAS-MSOL) is designed for highly qualified employed engineers who, for various reasons, are not able to attend on-campus M.S. programs, and who are keenly interested in maintaining up-to-date knowledge of “cutting-edge” engineering and technology. Designed for the working professional, our mission is to provide the same high quality engineering education at the Master of Science level that is available to our on campus students.  It is at the M.S. level that the engineer has the opportunity to learn a specialization in depth; and for those engineers with advanced degrees to renew and update their knowledge of technological advances that have been occurring at a rapid rate.

As the director of the program I have worked to ensure that the HSSEAS MSOL program is of the highest quality and worked to expand the online course offerings to represent many of the areas offered by the school.  The Master of Science in Engineering degree is the most flexible of the engineering degrees, allowing students to focus on specific areas of study or to build a multidisciplinary program of study that best fits their professional needs and goals.

Each course is taught by a member of the engineering faculty and is fully equivalent to the corresponding on-campus course; only the mode of delivery is different. Because of the equivalence with the on-campus program there is no “online” designation on transcripts or the diploma. We look forward to your joining this dynamic and rapidly growing program.

Sincerely,
Professor Christopher S. Lynch
Director, UCLA HSSEAS Master of Science in Engineering Online Program

Program Structure

How the Program Works

Course Lectures:
All courses are independently developed to enhance and address the specific needs of students learning at a distance. Classes are recorded in state of the art studios with specialized equipment designed to enhance the online education experience. Courses are available on demand via the Internet; and are archived for on demand viewing and review purposes.

Office Hours, Handouts, Homework Assignments:
Weekly live discussion sessions with a PhD. graduate teaching assistant provide a significant level of additional support for the online students. These sessions are recorded and archived for students who cannot attend these sessions. Homework and course notes are available through the UCLA Course web. This portal provides students with continuous access to lectures, course materials, and enables the electronic submission of homework.

Mid-term and Final Exams:
Students have the option of taking exams on-campus, or can have exams proctored nearby, at an approved testing site, such as a local college or university, or certified testing center.

Degree Designation

The Degree that you will earn is a Master of Science in Engineering. The transcript's degree designation will read "Master of Science in Engineering" and, because of equivalency, there will be no mention of "online."

Program Cost & Financial Aid Information

  • Application Fee
UCLA charges a $70 (US) application fee for US and Permanent Residents, $90 (US) for all other applicants.
